By-election in Thakurgaon-1 constituency to be held soon: EC

The Election Commission (EC) will hold a by-election in Thakurgaon-1 constituency, which was left vacant following the election of President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, soon.

The EC disclosed the information on Saturday afternoon.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said the commission would take the next steps after reviewing the relevant laws and regulations, adding that the by-election would be held within 90 days as the seat had been declared vacant.

He said the commission would not take much time to arrange the by-election as the local government elections were approaching.

“We will hold the election soon,” he said.

As per Article 50(4) of the Constitution, Mirza Fakhrul’s parliamentary seat in Thakurgaon-1 became vacant upon his assumption of office of President of Bangladesh, according to a Gazette notification issued by the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat on Saturday.

The Parliament Secretariat has sent a letter to the EC Secretariat informing it of the vacancy. The EC Secretariat will arrange the by-election after publishing a gazette notification declaring the seat vacant.
