A Dhaka court on Saturday placed five accused on a four-day remand for interrogation in a case filed over the killing and dismemberment of a young woman in the capital’s Sabujbagh area.
The accused are: Nusrat Jahan Sahida, 19, Faruk alias Jamai Faruk, 45, Md Shale Sujon, 20, D Mamun, 20, and Md Rafi Islam alias Bangi, 19.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monzurul Islam passed the order after police produced the accused before the court and sought a 10-day remand, the prosecution division confirmed.
According to the remand petition, police recovered a severed head and two hands of an unidentified woman wrapped in a polythene bag on August 6 from the Bagunbari Kalvert area under Sabujbagh Police Station.
According to the case documents, the victim was later identified as Suraiya Akter alias Falani, 19, with the help of information technology. Her parents also identified the body from photographs of the severed head and tattoos on both hands.
The case documents claimed that an analysis of CCTV footage from the scene and surrounding areas showed the victim, the arrested accused and several unidentified people sitting together for a long time on the Bagunbari Kalvert at around 9:30pm on 3 August.
The accused later allegedly took the victim to an unidentified location, and she was not seen again afterwards, according to the investigation. Police claimed that at around 12:20am on 4 August, all the accused except Faruk and the victim returned to the same area and stayed there for a considerable period before leaving the place.
Based on the preliminary investigation, police said the accused appeared to be involved in the killing. Police sought the remand to identify other people allegedly involved in the killing, determine their whereabouts and addresses, and facilitate their arrest.
