A Dhaka court on Saturday placed accused Farhan Shahriar alias Evan on a five-day remand in a case filed over allegedly assaulting, threatening and demanding extortion from Professor Dr Md Asadur Rahman of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monzurul Islam passed the order after hearing the remand plea, said prosecution department Sub-Inspector Rokonuzzaman.
Earlier in the day, Sub-Inspector Md Atikuzzaman of Paltan Model Police Station, also the investigating officer in the case, filed a 10-day remand petition.
According to the petition, Dr Md Asadur Rahman, 57, a professor at DMCH, has been regularly seeing patients at a chamber at Popular Diagnostic Centre in the Shantinagar area under Paltan Model Police Station for the past two months.
He was obstructed and assaulted by a group of people on 17 August while he was getting into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in front of Popular Diagnostic Centre in Shantinagar.
The victim was allegedly assaulted repeatedly, causing swelling and injuries to his head, above both eyes and different parts of his body. At that time, a passer-by detained one of the accused, Jibon alias Adil, while the other accused fled the scene.
Dr Asadur later filed a case with Paltan Police Station over the incident. The case also included allegations of demanding extortion from the doctor over the phone.
The case documents also said that several days earlier, an unidentified person had called the doctor from an unknown mobile number and demanded USD$15,000 in extortion.
Based on information obtained through the mobile number, technological investigation and sources, police arrested accused Evan from his residence on Friday. Police also claimed that he admitted to being present at the scene on the day of the incident and taking part in the alleged offence.
