‘Drug kingpin’ Selim remanded

A Dhaka court on Saturday placed alleged drug kingpin Md Selim Ashrafi alias Chua Selim, 45, on a three-day police remand in an arms case filed in the capital’s Mohammadpur area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monzurul Islam passed the order after police produced Selim before the court and sought a seven-day remand for interrogation.

According to the case statement, a team of Rab-2 conducted a raid and arrested Selim while he was trying to flee from Sector-7, Block-5 of Geneva Camp under Mohammadpur Police Station following a tip-off on 20 August.

Arms and drugs, including a 7.65mm foreign-made pistol, two rounds of bullets, two magazines and 110 grams of alleged heroin, along with a mobile phone, were recovered from him. Selim could not produce any valid documents or a licence for the firearm, police said.

The remand petition said that more than 36 cases had been filed against Selim, in which he is accused of drug dealing, terror activities, extortion, robbery etc, specially in the Geneva Camp area of Mohammadpur.

Police said the accused needed to be interrogated to identify the source of the recovered firearm, recover more firearms and gather information about his alleged criminal activities and modus operandi.
