Mirza Fakhrul hopes for a prosperous Bangladesh

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) presidential candidate, on Thursday expressed deep optimism about building a prosperous, welfare-oriented New Bangladesh ahead of the country’s upcoming presidential polls.

Speaking to media prior to the vote, Fakhrul outlined his vision for the country saying “I dream of a happy, prosperous, and welfare-oriented state where marginalised communities, hard-working people, and daily wage earners can afford meals twice a day,” he said.

He emphasised environmental health, security, youth employment, and self-employment opportunities for half of the country’s female population.

“I firmly believe that under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh will rise up as a self-respecting nation on the global stage,” he added.

Expressing his gratitude to Almighty Allah and the citizens of Bangladesh, the former BNP Secretary General thanked BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, stating that the nation would reach its ultimate destination under his leadership.

When asked about his transition, Fakhrul admitted with emotion that he would miss his previous roles.

“I pray for everyone’s health and safety, and I urge all citizens to cooperate with the government in building a welfare-oriented nation,” he said.

Reflecting on his political journey, Fakhrul paid an emotional tribute to former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

“Today, I remember Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia the most. Having been close to this great leader and first female freedom fighter, her words deeply touch my emotions at this moment,” he said.

Fakhrul, who began his career in left-wing student politics before moving to the Bhasani NAP, later joined the BNP founded by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.

He was eventually appointed BNP Secretary General by Khaleda Zia. He previously served as a minister and was elected to Parliament from the Thakurgaon-1 constituency in 2001.

Voting for the 23rd presidential election began at 2pm today at the Jatiya Sangsad.
