A Dhaka court on Monday placed accused Md Mahibullah Mubin, 29, on a five-day remand in a case filed over allegations of breaching Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s security and trying to disrupt a discussion meeting at the KIB Auditorium in the capital on 5 September.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order after hearing both sides, said State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon.
Earlier, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Asaduzzaman of Tejgaon Police Station, also the investigating officer, produced Mubin before the court and sought seven days’ remand for interrogation.
According to the case documents, on 5 September, Mahibullah Mubin, in collusion with unidentified accomplices, had allegedly been staying at the KIB Auditorium area with a motorcycle, where a programme was held to mark the BNP’s anniversary in the presence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The case alleged that he was, with the intention of breaching the Prime Minister’s security, planning a terrorist attack, disrupting the discussion meeting and creating instability in the country.
He was arrested at the scene with the assistance of a traffic sergeant deployed for the Prime Minister’s security, the complainant and other police officers and personnel, while his unidentified accomplices managed to flee the scene.
Police said they seized the motorcycle, two passports and two mobile phones with SIM cards from Mubin’s possession. A case was filed with Tejgaon Police Station under relevant sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009.
Police sought the remand stating that the accused needed to be interrogated to identify his absconding accomplices, as well as to determine whose instructions or instigation led him to the venue and whom he had communicated with before and after the incident.
Police also said the ownership and use of the two recovered passports, the reason for keeping them in his possession, and the origin and movements of the motorcycle needed to be verified.
