Creating employment is govt’s top priority: Finance minister

Creating new employment opportunities across the country is the government’s main goal, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said, stressing that the government is focusing on developing entrepreneurs to achieve the goal.

“Creating entrepreneurs and generating employment are the current government’s main priorities. The new project of Karmasangsthan Bank will create new employment opportunities across the country,” he said.

The finance minister made the remarks on Monday at a programme organised by Karmasangsthan Bank to launch the Small Business, Microcredit and Small Enterprise Fund Project and distribute loan cheques.

He said the initiative is a pilot project with an allocation of Tk50 crore.

Karmasangsthan Bank was established with the aim of providing loans to people who are reluctant or unable to approach conventional banks, thereby helping them become entrepreneurs and create employment, the minister said.

He urged Karmasangsthan Bank to undertake more programmes aimed at supporting aspiring entrepreneurs.

“This is not charity; it is part of the GDP. Even people with creative talents, including music and other forms of creativity, can be promoted. They too can contribute to the economy,” Amir Khosru said.

The government also wants to focus on and support the creative economy, he said, adding that greater development of the sector could have a positive impact on the economy and create new employment opportunities.
