Democracy is a mindset, not a mechanical system: Information minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman Partho said democracy is not a mechanical system, rather, it is a matter of mindset.

He said there had been no mindset in the country over the past 17 years to listen to criticism, while television channels were forced to speak in favour of the government.

The minister made the remarks during a regular briefing at the conference centre of the Department of Information at the Secretariat on Tuesday (25 August).

He said the current government has pledged to change this mindset and has made it clear that the government will neither control anyone nor silence anyone.

Responding to a question about whether the government was taking any new initiative to bring former fugitive Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back from India, the minister said the efforts were continuing.

“We have seen in the Indian Express that India may now leave the matter of bringing Sheikh Hasina back to the Indian courts,” he said.

“If the matter goes to the Indian courts, the situation will not be pleasant,” the minister added.

The information minister said Bangladesh is currently going through the most difficult period in its history and that efforts are underway to repair a system that has collapsed. Against this backdrop, he urged the media to play a responsible role.

The minister also claimed that no adverse influence had been exerted on the media over the past six months. No intelligence agency had called media outlets during this period to instruct them to publish or refrain from publishing any news, he said.

He further claimed that there had been no enforced disappearance or extrajudicial killing carried out with government backing during the period.

He said everyone enjoys full freedom to criticise the government.
