A Dhaka court on Monday granted bail to Salman F Rahman, former adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in a case over allegations that he assaulted and threatened a Bangladesh Infrastructure Finance Fund Limited (BIFFL) official.

The allegations relate to an attempt to secure approval for a $185 million loan for the Teesta Solar project.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam granted him bail on a Tk500 bond, defence lawyer Sajibul Islam confirmed.

He said they had applied for his bail and the court granted it in the case under Section 506 of the Penal Code.

SM Farmanul Islam, former chief executive officer of BIFFL, filed the case with a metropolitan magistrate’s court on 15 September 2024, accusing 12 people under Sections 143, 147, 387, 406, 427, 500 and 506 of the Penal Code.

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a charge sheet against six accused on 6 December 2025.

Court sources said five accused, including Salman F Rahman, who was shown arrested in the case on 17 August, have now secured bail.

The other accused granted bail are former Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder, former National Board of Revenue chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem, Md Monirul Islam Khan and Khandaker Anowarul Islam.

Another accused, Sajjad Hossain, is absconding, according to court sources.

Allegations against Salman F Rahman

According to the case statement, Salman allegedly pressured Farmanul to approve loans totalling around $185 million for his Teesta Solar project, as well as a Tk200 crore investment in zero-coupon bonds.

The complaint further alleges that Farmanul was pressured to approve unsecured loans worth hundreds of crores of taka for various companies under the Beximco Group. Farmanul allegedly refused to approve the loans, citing irregularities.

The accused subsequently allegedly assaulted Farmanul and threatened to kill him before forcing him to sign a resignation letter in July 2019, according to the case statement.

He was also allegedly threatened with being implicated in a corruption case.

The allegations are yet to be proven in court.
