A Dhaka court on Monday ordered that NASSA Group Chairman Nazrul Islam Mazumder be shown arrested in a case filed over the attempted murder of van driver Jabbar Ali Hawladar during the July movement in the capital’s Gulshan area.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order following a petition filed by the investigation officer, said state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon.

Earlier, on 18 August, Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Abdus Salam, also the investigation officer of the case, filed a petition to show Nazrul arrested in the case. The court then fixed Monday for a hearing in the presence of the accused.

According to the shown-arrest plea, Nazrul Islam Mazumder allegedly issued strict instructions to suppress the protesters during the July movement and spent money earned through smuggling and corruption for the movement.

The investigation found evidence of Nazrul’s involvement in the killing of van driver Jabbar Ali Hawladar on 19 July 2024. Therefore, in the interest of conducting a fair and impartial investigation, it is necessary to show the accused arrested in the case, the application said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch arrested Nazrul from the capital’s Gulshan area on the night of 1 October 2024. He has remained in jail since then.
