A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed accused Jibon alias Adil, 22, on a five-day remand in a case filed over an attack on Dr Md Asadur Rahman, professor and head of a department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat passed the order after a hearing, said state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon.

Earlier in the day, Paltan Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Atikuzzaman, also the investigating officer of the case, produced Adil before the court and sought a 10-day remand.

According to the case details, Adil and five to six of his associates allegedly intercepted Dr Asadur Rahman when he was about to board a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in front of Popular Diagnostic Centre in Shantinagar on 17 August.

The accused allegedly dragged him out of the vehicle and beat him mercilessly when he asked them the reason for intercepting him.

They also allegedly punched him in his right eye, leaving him seriously injured and bleeding. Adil was caught red-handed by locals and handed over to police.

Police sought the remand to determine whether there was any specific motive behind the attack and to help identify and arrest the other accused who remain absconding.
