The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka on Thursday commemorated National Mujahid Day, highlighting two pivotal milestones in Algeria’s liberation struggle — the North Constantine Offensive of 20 August 1955 and the Soummam Congress of 20 August 1956.
The embassy organised the ceremony at 11am in the presence of members of the diplomatic community, Bangladeshi officials, distinguished guests and friends of Algeria. It held the event on behalf of Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdelouahab Saidani.
This year’s commemoration carried the official slogan, “We Follow in Their Footsteps of Struggle”, highlighting the enduring values of unity, sacrifice, loyalty and commitment to national sovereignty.
In remarks at the ceremony, the embassy highlighted the historical and strategic links between the two milestones.
The North Constantine Offensive, led by revolutionary leader Zighout Youcef, demonstrated broad popular support for the National Liberation Front (FLN), expanded the armed struggle and helped internationalise the Algerian question, including at the United Nations.
The Soummam Congress, held a year later, strengthened political and military coordination within the revolution and laid important institutional foundations for the future Algerian state.
Together, the two events reflected the Algerian liberation movement’s popular support, strategic organisation and determination to achieve independence.
The embassy said the legacy of 20 August continues to shape Algeria’s national identity and foreign policy, particularly through the principles of sovereignty, unity, self-determination and solidarity with peoples defending their legitimate rights.
The commemoration also highlighted historical parallels between Algeria’s liberation struggle and Bangladesh’s struggle for independence. Both struggles involved political and socio-economic inequality, cultural suppression, popular mobilisation and the pursuit of self-determination and national sovereignty.
The embassy said the shared legacy continues to strengthen the bonds of friendship and solidarity between the Algerian and Bangladeshi peoples.
It reaffirmed that the legacy of 20 August 1955 and 20 August 1956 remains a symbol of unity, sacrifice and determination, inspiring future generations to uphold sovereignty, dignity and national independence.
