Landmine blast inside Myanmar kills youth near Bandarban border

A man was killed after a landmine exploded inside Myanmar near the Bangladesh border in Bandarban’s Naikhongchhari upazila on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Saiful, 32, son of Mohammad Saber, of Painchhari area in Ward No 8 of Dochhari Union.

Naikhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mozammel Haque confirmed the death, saying the blast occurred around 9:40am near Border Pillar No 52 under Targupora Border Outpost of BGB Battalion-11, about 400 metres from the Bangladesh-Myanmar zero line.

According to police, Saiful was seriously injured when a landmine planted by the Arakan Army exploded. Local people rescued him and took him to Naikhongchhari Upazila Health Complex. He was being taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for better treatment when doctors at the health complex examined him and declared him dead.

Naikhongchhari Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Ismat Jahan Itu said the administration and law enforcement agencies were investigating the incident. She urged people in border areas to remain alert.

OC Mohammad Mozammel Haque said legal procedures were underway. He described the incident as a serious public safety concern, as landmines inside Myanmar continue to pose a risk to Bangladeshi residents living near the border.

The law and order situation in Naikhongchhari remained normal, he added.
