PBI arrests teen girl’s killer within 24 hours in Keraniganj

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested the alleged killer of a teenage girl within 24 hours of the murder in Keraniganj, recovering the murder weapon, the victim’s two mobile phones and stolen jewellery.

The development was disclosed by PBI Dhaka District Superintendent of Police M N Morshed at a press briefing held at the PBI Dhaka District office in Uttara on Thursday.

The arrested suspect is Md Rana Hawlader (30), an auto-rickshaw driver. He was arrested from the Rajendrapur area of South Keraniganj early on Wednesday.

According to the PBI, the accused also gave a confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Police said the victim, 17-year-old Mosammat Tanzila, daughter of late Habib and Naslima Begum of South Keraniganj, left her home around 2:00pm on Monday  and went to her aunt’s house at Baghair, where she had lunch.

She left for home at around 4:00pm but went missing.

The following morning, her family learned that the throat-slit body of a young woman had been found on a plot of land beside a madrasa and mosque in Madinanagar under Kalindi Union of Keraniganj Model Police Station.

Her mother later identified the body as that of Tanzila.

Following the incident, Keraniganj Model Police Station registered a murder case filed by the victim’s mother against unidentified persons.

PBI later took over the investigation and assigned Sub-Inspector Md Saidul Haque as the investigating officer.

Using intelligence and information technology, investigators identified and arrested Rana Hawlader within 24 hours of taking over the case.

Based on his information, detectives recovered the knife used in the killing, the victim’s two smartphones and her silver chain and bracelet.

According to investigators, Rana and Tanzila had been in a romantic relationship for the past six to seven months.

The PBI said Tanzila had allegedly asked Rana for Tk30,000, which he failed to arrange, leading to repeated arguments between them.

On the afternoon of Monday, Rana took Tanzila for a ride in his auto-rickshaw.

When they reached an area opposite Sharif Food Park near Madinanagar in Keraniganj, another argument broke out.

Investigators said Rana allegedly strangled the victim before slitting her throat with a fruit-cutting knife to ensure her death.

He then fled the scene after taking her two smartphones, a silver chain and a silver bracelet.

According to the PBI, the accused later hid the victim’s mobile phones in a haystack near his rented house while keeping the jewellery in his possession. All the stolen items were later recovered during the investigation.

Speaking at the briefing, SP MN Morshed said the PBI crime scene team immediately launched a shadow investigation after receiving information about the sensational murder and subsequently took over the case.

“Through intensive investigation, we identified and arrested the accused within just 24 hours. The investigation is continuing,” he said.
