Police officer suspended after testing positive for drugs

The government has temporarily suspended Superintendent of Police (TR) A F M Nizam Uddin after he tested positive in a drug test during the Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC)-2026 course.

His urine sample tested positive for benzodiazepines (BZO) and amphetamine/methamphetamine after he fell ill and was taken to hospital during the course.

The Home Ministry’s Public Security Division issued a notification in this regard on Thursday (10 September). Senior Secretary Manzur Morshed Chowdhury signed the notification by order of the President.

According to the notification, A F M Nizam Uddin was serving as superintendent of police (TR) at the Police Directorate.

He is currently attached to the office of the deputy inspector general (DIG) of the Rangpur Range.

He left the Police Directorate in Dhaka on 8 January to attend the DSCSC-2026 course at Mirpur Cantonment. On 7 June, he fell ill during the course and was sent to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.

On the advice of specialist doctors, he underwent a drug test as part of a series of medical examinations at the hospital.

The government notification said his urine sample tested positive for benzodiazepines (BZO) and amphetamine/methamphetamine. The test result was considered a breach of discipline during the DSCSC course.

Under Rule 3(b) of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018, such conduct constitutes a punishable offence of “misconduct”, the notification said.
