UCB Investment, Rupali Investment host capital market stakeholders’ meet

UCB Investment Limited and Rupali Investment Limited jointly organized “Capital Market Stakeholders Meet – Unlock Possibilities in the Next Chapter of Progress” at a hotel in the capital recently, bringing together key capital market stakeholders, investors and other market participants.

The discussion focused on Bangladesh’s economy and the role of the capital market in supporting the country’s next chapter of growth, said a press release issued Sunday. Participants discussed recent regulatory initiatives and practical reforms being introduced by the current leadership of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) to help create a more supportive environment for the development of the country’s capital market.

The event featured speeches by United Commercial Bank PLC (UCB) Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Mamdudur Rashid; Rupali Investment Limited Chairman and Rupali Bank PLC Managing Director Kazi Md. Wahidul Islam; Rupali Investment Limited Chief Executive Officer Md. Fokhrul Hasan; Dhaka Stock Exchange PLC Director Minhaz Mannan Emon; and UCB Investment Limited Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Tanzim Alamgir.

Speakers noted that stronger private-sector and industrial investment will be important for sustaining economic growth in the coming years. In this process, banks, financial institutions and the capital market will all have an important role in mobilizing and channeling funds to productive sectors of the economy. In this context, strengthening the capital base of banks remains important to enhance their ability to support businesses and broader economic activity.

UCB Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Mamdudur Rashid said, “over the past two years, we have placed particular emphasis on strengthening the bank’s liquidity, loan management and recovery efforts, as well as its overall financial capacity. As a result, the bank is now firmly moving from stability towards sustainable growth. Our ongoing rights share issue will further strengthen the bank’s capital base and enhance its capacity for future growth. In this journey, the confidence and participation of our shareholders and capital market stakeholders are extremely important to UCB.”

Kazi Md. Wahidul Islam, Chairman of Rupali Investment Limited and Managing Director of Rupali Bank PLC, said, “United Commercial Bank’s recent turnaround journey is a notable example in the country’s banking sector. Strong leadership, timely decision-making, and clear strategic direction have played a significant role in driving this progress. Rupali Bank and Rupali Investment will continue to stand alongside UCB as partners in this journey and work together in the broader interest of the country’s economy.”

At the event, Minhaz Mannan Emon, Director of Dhaka Stock Exchange PLC, said, “The banking sector was devastated during the fascist regime. Subsequently, the sector has been striving to recover. In this regard, UCB has set an example. UCB is a reliable institution for share investors, and it has already proven its credibility.”

The discussion also touched on the capital challenges facing the banking sector, which recorded an aggregate capital shortfall of approximately Tk2.78 lakh crore as of 31 December 2025. Participants discussed how the sector could gradually overcome these constraints, strengthen capital positions and restore its capacity to support business expansion and broader economic activity.

Against this backdrop, UCB’s remarkable progress over the past two years was highlighted. Participants shared various views and recommendations on how UCB can further strengthen its position and support its future growth.

UCB Investment Limited and Rupali Investment Limited are serving as the Joint Issue Managers to the Rights Share Issue of United Commercial Bank PLC.

The organizers said continued engagement among investors, issuers, intermediaries and regulators could help strengthen market confidence and support the development of a deeper and more effective capital market.
