Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-10) has arrested five people over a shooting that injured three people, including a woman, in capital’s Gendaria, on August 30 during a dispute over control of the drug trade.

RAB-10 Commander Additional DIG Mohammad Asaduzzaman revealed this information at a press briefing at RAB Media Centre on Thursday.

He said the shooting took place in the Karatitola area under Gendaria Police Station on 30 August amid a dispute over control of the drug trade.

The injured were passers-by Ayesha Akter, 20, and Siam, 18, and tea seller Alamgir, 33.

Ayesha was shot in her right leg, Siam in the left side of his chest and Alamgir in the head. Alamgir Hossain Russell and Siam Hossain Rubel underwent surgery and recovered. Ayesha is stable, but the bullet in her leg could not yet be removed.

RAB identified the suspects by analysing CCTV footage and intelligence. Jisan, 19, and Ramzan, 19, were arrested from Munsirtek on 1 September, followed by Shaheen, 34, on Tuesday. The next day, Shabab Hossain Shaikat, 29, and Mohammad Mahim, 18, were arrested.

Two foreign pistols, three magazines, 12 live rounds, 420 yaba tablets worth Tk3.13 lakh, 400 packets of heroin, 900g of cannabis, cash and other evidence were seized from Shaikat. One magazine was identified as police ammunition looted after the July Uprising. RAB is investigating the sources and other suspects, Asaduzzaman added.

Shaikat is an accused in three drug cases filed with Jatrabari Police Station.

RAB will take legal action against the five arrested. RAB is also investigating to find the source of the weapons, drugs and ammunition and identify others involved, the official said.
