The by-election to the Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary constituency, which was declared vacant, will be held on 29 October, the Election Commission (EC) announced on Thursday.

The election schedule was announced three weeks after BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir assumed the office of president.

Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed disclosed the schedule to the media after the commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, finalised it at a meeting at the Election Commission building in Agargaon.

According to the schedule, the deadline for submitting nomination papers to the returning officer is 27 September.

Nomination papers will be scrutinised on 29 September, while the last date for withdrawing candidacies is 7 October. Electoral symbols will be allocated to candidates on 8 October.

Voting in the constituency will take place on 29 October.
