The Dhaka-Chattogram highway, the lifeline of Bangladesh’s economy and communications network, is set for major transformation through technology-driven traffic management and new infrastructure aimed at reducing accidents and congestion.

The initiatives include 24-hour surveillance through AI-powered cameras, an automated fine system, construction of overpasses and underpasses, and a long-term plan to upgrade the highway to 10 lanes.

24-hour surveillance through AI cameras:

AI-powered cameras and an “auto fine” system were launched on August 18 to detect traffic law violations along around 250 kilometres of the highway, from Signboard in Jatrabari to Chittagong City Gate.

A total of 1,427 AI cameras are planned at 490 points. The system detects speeding, failure to maintain designated lanes, dangerous overtaking, driving on the wrong side and illegal parking.

State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Habibur Rashid Habib said the government is giving equal importance to road expansion, modern technology, traffic discipline and necessary infrastructure.

He said the AI camera and auto fine system had ushered in a new era in traffic-law enforcement and would encourage drivers to follow the law, helping reduce accidents.

Within the first 24 hours of launching the system, 449 cases were filed and fines totalling Tk 15.51 lakh were imposed, with speeding accounting for the highest number of violations.

Following a violation, SMS notifications and fine notices are sent to the registered vehicle owner. Fines can also be paid through mobile financial services.

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Mohammad Habibur Rahman said the high number of violations detected initially was normal, adding that regular surveillance would increase awareness and gradually reduce violations.
