The Internal Resources Division (IRD) has waived the punishments of 20 officials who took part in the movement against reforms at the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

The IRD issued a gazette notification on Sunday (6 September) following their appeals to the president seeking remission of their punishments.

At one point during the movement over NBR reforms in 2025, the country’s import and export activities faced major disruptions. The movement was later withdrawn following mediation by business leaders.

The IRD subsequently took departmental action against 39 officials who were directly involved in the movement. Among them, three NBR members and a commissioner were sent into compulsory retirement.

Earlier, the authorities had initiated steps to waive the punishments of 24 officials involved in the movement. Of them, 14 officials from the income tax cadre and 10 from the customs, excise and VAT cadre had applied to the president for remission of their punishments.

The officials whose punishments have been waived include Imam Touhid Hasan Shakil (deputy tax commissioner, Tax Zone-21 Dhaka), Mirza Ashiq Rana (additional tax commissioner, Tax Zone-Dinajpur), Monalisa Shahreen Sumita (joint tax commissioner, Tax Zone-Mymensingh), Md Mamun Mia (joint tax commissioner, Tax Zone-Jashore), Chand Sultana Chowdhurani (additional tax commissioner (current charge), Tax Zone-Gazipur), Sultana Habib, (additional tax commissioner (current charge), Tax Zone-12, Dhaka), Murad Ahmed (additional tax commissioner, Tax Zone-Jashore), Mamuna Khatun (joint tax commissioner, e-Tax Management Unit, Dhaka), Mohammad Morshed Uddin Khan ( joint tax commissioner, Tax Zone-Faridpur) and Md Zillur Rahman.
