Three bodies recovered after four go missing in Shitalakshya River

The bodies of three of four people who went missing in the Shitalakshya River in Shibpur, Narsingdi, have been recovered.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when three people drowned while bathing in the river after visiting a relative’s house. Another person went missing while attempting to rescue them.

A diving team from Bhairab recovered the bodies on Saturday morning, said Islam Khan, a leader of the Shibpur Fire Service.

The deceased were identified as Md Obaidullah, 38, son of Billal Hossain of Bhangal village in Kaliganj, Gazipur; Shanta, 16, of Phulbaria village in Kapasia; and Sourav, 18, son of Majnu Mia of Shibpur.

Md Shanto, 24, son of Juel of Tangail, remains missing.

According to police, fire service officials and locals, the incident took place around 4:30pm on Friday near Lakhpur village in Dulalpur union. Three visitors had gone to Majnu Mia’s house and later joined family members for a bath in the Shitalakshya.

The three reportedly drowned as they could not swim. Sourav was swept away by the strong current while attempting to rescue them.

Locals searched the river after being informed, but could not find anyone. Fire service personnel later began a search operation, which was suspended after nightfall.

The operation resumed on Saturday morning when the Bhairab diving team arrived and recovered the three bodies. The search for Shanto is continuing.
