Natural disasters such as heavy rainfall, floods, inundation and other calamities remind us of the infinite power and authority of Almighty Allah, as well as our own weakness and dependence on Him. During such times, Muslims are encouraged to remember Allah more frequently, seek His forgiveness and pray for His mercy and protection.

The Holy Qur’an states that Allah sent messengers to many previous nations and then afflicted them with hunger, poverty and various hardships so that they might humble themselves and return to Him. However, instead of taking heed, they persisted in their disobedience until Allah seized them unexpectedly. (Surah Al-An’am, 6:42-44)

According to Islamic scholars, natural disasters can serve as a warning and an opportunity for self-reflection. Therefore, believers should remain patient, repent sincerely and seek Allah’s forgiveness and protection during times of hardship.

Supplication During Thunder and Lightning

It is narrated that whenever the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) heard thunder or the roaring of clouds, he would recite the following supplication:

اللَّهُمَّ لاَ تَقْتُلْنَا بِغَضَبِكَ وَلاَ تُهْلِكْنَا بِعَذَابِكَ وَعَافِنَا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ

Transliteration: Allahumma la taqtulna bighadabika, wa la tuhlikna bi’adhabika, wa ‘afina qabla dhalik.

Meaning: “O Allah, do not destroy us with Your wrath, do not annihilate us with Your punishment, and grant us safety and well-being before that.”

This supplication was narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and recorded in Jami’ al-Tirmidhi.

Supplication When Rain Becomes Harmful

When excessive rainfall caused hardship or damage, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would supplicate:

اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا، وَلَا عَلَيْنَا

Transliteration: Allahumma hawalayna wa la ‘alayna.

Meaning: “O Allah, let the rain fall around us, not upon us.”

This narration is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith No. 933).

Practical Guidance During Natural Disasters

Islamic scholars emphasize that alongside making sincere supplications, Muslims should take practical steps to protect themselves and others. This includes:

• Seeking shelter in a safe place.
• Following the instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
• Assisting those affected by the disaster.
• Praying for the safety and well-being of all people.

Islam teaches believers to place their trust in Allah while also taking every reasonable precaution and adopting appropriate safety measures.

In times of calamity, faith, patience, compassion and responsible action are essential. Muslims are encouraged to turn to Allah in prayer while fulfilling their duty to protect themselves and support those in need.
