Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 39 gold bars worth an estimated Tk13 crore and arrested one suspected smuggler during a raid at the Darshana border in Chuadanga on Saturday.
The operation was carried out in the Darshana border area of Damurhuda upazila on Saturday evening after intelligence reports suggested that a large consignment of gold was being transported for cross-border smuggling.
The seizure was confirmed in a press release issued later that evening by Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Hasan, Commanding Officer of BGB-6 Chuadanga.
The arrested man was identified as Rabiul Islam, 34, son of Ahmad Ali, from Chhoygharia village in Damurhuda upazila.
According to the BGB, border guards stepped up surveillance after receiving intelligence about the planned smuggling attempt. During the operation, they intercepted a motorcycle, detained Rabiul Islam and recovered 39 gold bars during a search.
Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Hasan said the suspect admitted during preliminary questioning that he had been carrying the gold bars with the intention of smuggling them into India.
The suspect has been handed over to Darshana Police Station for legal action, while the seized gold is being processed for deposit with the Chuadanga Treasury Office in accordance with government regulations.
The latest seizure underscores the BGB’s ongoing efforts to curb gold smuggling along the Bangladesh-India border.
