A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered that former Patuakhali-2 lawmaker and Awami League leader ASM Firoz be shown arrested in two separate cases filed with Jatrabari Police Station in the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order after a hearing, said state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon.

Earlier, on 3 September, the investigation officers in the two cases filed petitions seeking court orders to show Firoz arrested in the cases.

According to the application filed by SI Nazim Uddin Fakir, suspected accused Firoz, along with the other accused, allegedly launched a sudden armed attack on anti-discrimination student protesters on 19 July at Kutubkhali High School under Jatrabari Police Station.

At one point, Naim Hawlader, 17, was shot in the front of his left shoulder and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where he died while undergoing treatment. A murder case was filed with Jatrabari Police Station on 24 August 2024 over the incident.

Another plea was submitted by SI Rafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, which said Md Tarique Chowkidar, 24, and his roommate Shihab were on the rooftop of Subarna Panna Mansion at 178 North Kutubkhali at around noon on 19 July 2024.

The application said the complainant sustained a gunshot wound to his upper left arm when he and others moved forward to rescue Shihab, who had been shot on the rooftop. An attempted murder case was subsequently filed on 26 March 2025 over the incident.

The investigation officers sought orders to show Firoz arrested in both cases, as he is currently in jail in another case. The court allowed the applications and ordered that he be shown arrested in the two cases following the hearing.
