Interpol Red Notice sought against former army chief Aziz

A letter has been sent to the National Central Bureau (NCB) of Bangladesh Police to take steps to seek a ‘Red Notice’ through Interpol for the arrest of former army chief General (retd) Aziz Ahmed, an accused in a case involving crimes against humanity.

The Office of the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal sent the letter to the NCB on Monday.

Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam disclosed the information to journalists on Tuesday.

The NCB is the central communication and coordinating agency between Interpol and each of its member countries. It is located at the Bangladesh Police headquarters and facilitates the exchange of information on international criminals and fugitives as well as their arrests.

Speaking at his office, the chief prosecutor said they had learned that Aziz Ahmed was staying in the United States. After confirming the information, they sent the letter to the NCB on Monday seeking a Red Notice.

Asked whether the NCB forwarded the letter to Interpol, the chief prosecutor said, “I cannot say that. We sent it yesterday (Monday). Once we send it, it means they will forward it.”

Aziz Ahmed is one of 41 accused in the crimes against humanity case filed over the killings surrounding the Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel, Dhaka, on 5 May 2013. Eleven of the accused are currently in custody.

The chief prosecutor told journalists that they sent the letter to the NCB to arrest Aziz Ahmed with Interpol’s assistance through the issuance of a Red Notice and bring him back to Bangladesh.

The NCB will take the necessary steps in this regard, he added.
