The authorities of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) have temporarily suspended 31 students following an attack on a fellow student and vandalism at a residential hall.
The decision was taken on Thursday night (21 May) at the 27th meeting of the university’s Discipline and Suspension Board.
In an office order signed by Registrar (Additional Charge) Prof Dr Md Abu Hasan, it was stated that around 2:30pm on Thursday, more than a hundred students entered Shaheed Abrar Fahad Hall carrying locally made weapons and sticks and attacked student Shahid Noor Hossain. During the incident, they also vandalised the hall’s prayer room, CCTV cameras and other property. An assistant proctor and several students were injured in the attack.
The university authorities said the accused were identified based on video footage and eyewitness accounts. Acting under Articles 14 and 15 of the university’s student discipline ordinance, the administration decided to suspend the 31 students immediately.
Sources said the order was implemented after approval from the vice-chancellor and was sent to relevant faculty deans, department chairpersons, hall administrations and administrative offices.
Tension remains high on the campus following the incident.
The university administration said additional security measures have been taken to maintain order, while further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
