BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Thursday called for an end to the longstanding mafia rule, disorder and extortion in the road transport sector, saying the industry must be brought under the rule of law.
He also urged the newly elected leadership of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation to protect the interests of ordinary workers and improve passenger services.
Rizvi made the remarks while speaking to journalists after placing floral wreaths at the graves of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in the capital in the morning.
He was accompanied by leaders of the federation’s new committee.
“The mafia-based control that has developed around the road transport sector must be eliminated through immediate and effective measures,” he said.
Rizvi expressed hope that the new leadership would work to overcome the sector’s longstanding stagnation and play a leading role in protecting workers’ interests and improving the quality of passenger services.
Emphasising the need to modernise the transport sector, he said new initiatives would be taken to overhaul the industry and bring road transport fully under the law.
He also said efforts would be made to end longstanding disorder and set new standards in passenger services.
Criticising the past 17 years of political disorder, Rizvi said a lasting end to the prevailing chaos could be achieved if politicians took responsibility for preventing political instability.
Earlier, leaders and activists of the National Road Transport Workers’ Organisation arrived at the graves with banners and a procession led by its newly elected president and former lawmaker Nazim Uddin Alam, executive president Mortazul Karim Badru and general secretary Rezaul Islam Raju.
Rizvi later joined the new committee leaders in paying homage at the graves of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia.
