Two of the four suspects arrested in connection with the murder of schoolboy Ishayat Shahriar Opratim in Cumilla are being sent to the Tongi Child Development Centre in Gazipur. The other two suspects have been remanded in Cumilla Central Jail.

SI Saiful Islam, investigation officer in the Opratim murder case and of Cumilla Sadar South Model Police Station, confirmed the information on Monday morning (21 September).

He said the four suspects were handed over to the Cumilla jail authorities on Sunday night. As directed by the court, Mozammel Hossain Fahad, 15, and Kamrul Hasan, 16, will be sent to the Tongi Child Development Centre in Gazipur because of their age. The other two suspects, Saiful Islam Tuhin, 19, and Siam, 19, will remain in Cumilla Central Jail.

Senior Jail Superintendent of Cumilla Central Jail Md Shah Alam Khan said police had handed over the four suspects in the murder case to the jail authorities. Of them, the two juveniles will be sent to the Tongi Child Development Centre in Gazipur on Monday.

Opritom went missing from the Kotbari area of Cumilla on Friday afternoon (18 September). He was the only child of Dr Nahida Begum, an associate professor in the Department of Bengali at Cumilla University, and a seventh-grade student at Border Guard Public School.

According to his family, Opritom went out on Friday afternoon to take photographs using his mother’s iPhone but did not return home. Later, his father, Firoz Shahriar, filed a general diary with Sadar South Model Police Station over his disappearance.

The following day, Saturday afternoon, police recovered Opritom’s body from a bush in Sananda village in the Lalmai Hills area near Cumilla University.
