The residence of Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Golam Rasul in Jashore came under attack on Tuesday after a dispute involving him and his daughter at a local madrasa escalated into violence, police and local residents said.

The attack took place around 11am at the MP’s house in the Nilganj area of Jashore town. Police later reached the scene and provided security to the MP and his family, who remained inside the residence.

Golam Rasul represents the Jashore-4 (Bagharpara-Abhaynagar) constituency and serves as the district ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami.

According to police and local residents, the dispute stemmed from a long-running disagreement over an access road to Al Madrasatus Shariyah and an adjacent mosque located in front of the MP’s residence.

Police said the MP’s daughter, Anannya, was involved in an altercation with several madrasa students on Monday, which was resolved through police mediation.

However, tensions flared again on Tuesday morning when Golam Rasul and his daughter went to the madrasa and became involved in another dispute with teachers and guardians.

Witnesses alleged that Anannya assaulted a local woman, identified as Reksona, causing a head injury, and later confronted a guardian named Nasir Uddin. The incident sparked anger among local residents, who later attacked and vandalised the MP’s residence.

Several protesters also alleged that threats had been made to shut down the madrasa and demanded a proper investigation and legal action against those responsible.

Speaking in a Facebook Live video, Golam Rasul apologised for the situation and said the dispute centred on a road that his family had purchased and wanted to keep open.

“I am deeply saddened by the situation. I apologise for what happened. We want to live peacefully with everyone,” he said.

The MP also claimed that his daughter has a mental illness and has received treatment at hospitals in India, including in Hyderabad, as well as in Bangladesh.

Expressing concern over his family’s safety, he alleged that some people had stockpiled gunpowder and that his house could be set on fire at any time.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Jashore Kotwali Police Station Masum Khan said residents attacked the house after the renewed dispute and demanded justice.

“Police are at the scene and have provided security to the MP and his family,” the OC said.
