From Awami League Circles to New Political Alliances? Questions Surround Md. Shakil Khan

Engineer, poet, and newly enlisted lyricist of Bangladesh Betar Dhaka Centre, Md. Shakil Khan, has become the subject of widespread discussion and controversy on social media following allegations regarding a significant shift in his political alignment.

According to information and screenshots circulating online, as well as content reportedly taken from his own Facebook posts, Shakil Khan maintained close associations in the past with individuals and organizations linked to the Awami League. Critics claim that he actively participated in various political, social, and organizational events during that period.

Several photographs widely shared across social media are claimed to show Shakil Khan alongside former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several ministers and senior leaders of the then Awami League government. These images have fueled renewed debate about his previous political affiliations.

Critics further allege that following the political transition of August 5, 2024, Shakil Khan gradually distanced himself from his previous political position and attempted to establish closer ties with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Social media users have also pointed out that he was subsequently enlisted as a lyricist at Bangladesh Betar Dhaka Centre, a development that has drawn additional public attention.

The controversy has also extended to his wife, Dr. Bilkis Lila, whose older social media posts have resurfaced online. Critics claim that several of those posts contained messages praising former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In addition, unverified allegations have been circulating on social media claiming that the couple has continued to provide financial assistance to individuals or activities associated with the Awami League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, or other like-minded organizations. No publicly available evidence has independently verified these allegations, and neither Shakil Khan nor his wife has publicly responded to the claims at the time of writing.

Professionally, Md. Shakil Khan currently serves as a Sub-Divisional Engineer at the Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (DESCO). He joined the organization as an Assistant Engineer in 2012 and was promoted to his current position in 2019.

During his student years at Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET), he served as an Assistant Secretary of the university unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.

Various publicly available sources also indicate that he has held leadership positions in numerous social, cultural, and professional organizations. These include serving as Publicity Secretary of the Central Committee of the Bangabandhu Foundation, Organizing Secretary of Bangabandhu Engineers Council (DESCO), Organizing Secretary of the Central Committee of Stage for Youth, Vice President and Trustee of Amra Sobai Foundation, Convener of Agrojatray Manab Kallyan Foundation, and Chairman of Awami Technology & Roboment and BSL Agro BD.

He has also reportedly been associated with organizations such as Manobik  Dhaka Society and Praner ’71.

Many of these organizations have historically been identified as pro-Awami League or founded on the ideals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. As a result, following Bangladesh’s political transition in August 2024, questions have emerged in various circles regarding Shakil Khan’s current political position and whether his affiliations represent a genuine ideological shift or political realignment.

No official investigation or judicial finding has so far substantiated the allegations circulating on social media, and the claims remain the subject of public debate rather than established fact.
