The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka on Saturday celebrated the 64th National Independence Day of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria with a ceremony highlighting the country’s historic struggle for freedom, revolutionary legacy and growing ties with Bangladesh.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon attended the programme as the chief guest.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of different institutions, members of the Bangladesh-Algeria Business Forum, journalists, civil society representatives, cultural personalities, war veterans, spiritual leaders, military and civil officials, and members of the Algerian community were also present.

Welcoming the guests, Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdelouahab Saidani said 5 July marks a historic milestone for Algeria, which gained independence in 1962 after 132 years of colonial rule.

He said the day is also observed as Youth Day in Algeria in recognition of the contributions of young people to the country’s liberation struggle.

Referring to this year’s theme, “The Legacy of Generations”, the ambassador said the occasion honours the sacrifices of previous generations while inspiring young people to build a prosperous and sovereign nation.

He described Algeria’s independence struggle as a symbol of resilience, dignity, justice and the quest for freedom.

The ambassador highlighted Algeria’s support for liberation movements worldwide and said the country’s foreign policy remains rooted in the principles of self-determination, non-alignment, anti-colonialism, respect for sovereignty and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

He also underscored Algeria’s strategic importance as a bridge between the Mediterranean region and the Sahel, as well as its contribution to regional stability and global energy security.

Speaking about economic prospects, Saidani said Algeria is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for foreign investment and invited Bangladeshi businesses to explore opportunities in sectors including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, energy and information technology.

He praised the Bangladesh-Algeria Business Forum for its role in strengthening bilateral trade and investment.

The ambassador recalled that Algeria was the first Arab country to officially recognise independent Bangladesh in 1971 and said the two countries continue to strengthen their longstanding friendship and economic cooperation.

Addressing the event, Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon said Algeria and Bangladesh share similarities in their struggles for independence and paid tribute to the martyrs of both nations.

He praised Algeria’s strategic and economic importance, particularly its energy resources and contribution to European energy security.

The minister also appreciated the Bangladesh-Algeria Business Forum for promoting bilateral economic engagement and called for stronger cooperation between Dhaka and Algiers in business, finance, culture and diplomacy.

He expressed optimism that the two countries would continue to deepen their friendship and expand cooperation in the years ahead.
