India desires positive, constructive ties with Bangladesh: Jaiswal

India on Tuesday reiterated its desire to maintain positive, constructive and forward-looking relations with Bangladesh based on mutual interests and reciprocity.

“Our position on the press conference by the former PM needs no repetition,” Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at the ministry’s weekly press briefing.

Responding to questions on remarks by Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry, Jaiswal said India’s position on extradition requests also remained unchanged.

“On the issue of extraditions, our consistent position has been that these requests are being examined as part of our established processes,” he said.

The remarks came two days after Bangladesh urged India to expedite the extradition of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives, as well as the handover of the alleged killers of July revolutionary Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, saying such steps were needed to create a “propitious environment” for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s potential visit to India.
