Mehidy Hasan Miraz ends 14-year wait with historic fifer in Australia

Mehidy Hasan Miraz produced a historic five-wicket haul as Bangladesh secured their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil, becoming the first visiting spinner in 14 years to claim five wickets in a third innings.

Miraz’s superb spell helped Bangladesh bowl Australia out for 284 in their second innings, leaving the visitors a target of just 57 runs. Bangladesh went on to chase down the modest target and complete a landmark Test victory.

Miraz finished with five wickets, becoming the first visiting spinner since Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath in 2012 to take a five-wicket haul in the third innings of a Test in Australia. Herath had returned figures of 5-95.

India’s Kuldeep Yadav was the last visiting spinner to claim a five-wicket haul in Australia, achieving the feat in the second innings in 2019.

Miraz also became only the second Bangladesh bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a Test against Australia on Australian soil. Hasan Mahmud had taken six wickets in Australia’s first innings in Darwin.

Overall, Miraz is the fourth Bangladesh bowler to claim a five-wicket haul against Australia in Tests. The others are Mohammad Rafique and Shakib Al Hasan, with the latter having achieved the feat twice.

The Darwin performance also marked Miraz’s 15th five-wicket haul in Test cricket and his third such haul outside Asia.

Hasan Mahmud, meanwhile, finished the match with impressive figures of 9-110, having taken six wickets in the first innings and three in the second. He narrowly missed becoming the first Bangladesh bowler to take 10 wickets in a Test against Australia.

His match figures are nevertheless the second-best by a Bangladesh pace bowler in Test cricket. The record belongs to Shahadat Hossain Rajib, who took 9-97 against South Africa.

Miraz and Hasan’s performances proved decisive as Bangladesh bowled Australia out for 198 in the first innings, before posting 426 to secure a 228-run lead and eventually complete a historic victory in Darwin.
