A 24-year-old man has allegedly killed his mother and eight-month-old niece and injured his sister-in-law in Debidwar upazila of Cumilla.

The incident took place at around 8:30am on Monday (21 September) at the house of Mostafa Master in the southern part of Barashalghar village under Barashalghar Union.

The deceased were identified as the suspect’s mother, Peya Begum, and his eight-month-old niece. His sister-in-law, Rabeya Begum, was seriously injured and taken to hospital.

Locals said Imon suddenly became agitated and attacked his mother with a sharp machete. He later attacked his infant niece. When Rabeya tried to intervene, he allegedly attacked her as well, leaving her seriously injured.

After the incident, local residents detained Imon and locked him inside a room. They then rescued Rabeya and rushed her to hospital.

Debidwar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman said police were on their way to the scene after receiving information about the incident.

“Preliminarily, we have learned that Imon had been ill for a long time. However, the reason behind the incident has not yet been confirmed,” he said.

The OC said details would emerge after police reached the scene and conducted an investigation.
