World Cup match dispute triggers clash at Mawlana Bhashani University, 10 injured

A clash broke out among students of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) in Tangail over watching the Argentina-Egypt World Cup football match on Tuesday night, leaving at least 10 people, including a teacher, injured.

The incident also involved vandalism on the campus, according to university sources.

Witnesses said the dispute started around 10pm when the match began over seating arrangements. The argument later turned into a physical confrontation involving students from three departments. The clash continued for nearly an hour.

The university’s proctor office said seven injured students were receiving treatment at Tangail Medical College Hospital as of Wednesday morning, while another seriously injured student was undergoing treatment at Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur.

Assistant Proctor Dr Abdul Quddus also suffered injuries during the clash and received primary treatment.

University Proctor Dr Munir Morshed said the incident began over a minor issue and police arrived on campus at night to bring the situation under control.

“The vice-chancellor and the students involved in the incident will discuss the matter and take necessary steps,” he said.

Campus sources said the situation remained tense on Wednesday morning despite the clash ending overnight.
