A Bangladeshi national was reportedly killed in firing by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) in the Raiganj subdivision of West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has contacted the BSF over the incident and sought details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
In a press release issued at 12:10am on Sunday (September 13), the BGB said the incident reportedly took place at around 1:35am on September 12, according to reports published by several Bangladeshi and foreign media outlets.
According to preliminary information, BSF personnel from the Chakshibanand camp opened fire on a group of Bangladeshis in the Raiganj subdivision, around 1.5km inside Indian territory from border pillar No. 333/MP in the area under the jurisdiction of Chandarhat Border Outpost (BOP) of the Dinajpur Battalion (42 BGB).
One Bangladeshi was critically injured in the shooting and was later taken to a local hospital in India, where he died while undergoing treatment, the BGB said.
The deceased was identified as Asadul Haque, 38, son of Abdul Wazed and a resident of Idrail village in Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon.
Citing preliminary information, the BGB said several cases related to drugs and human trafficking had been filed against Asadul Haque. However, the press release did not provide further details about the allegations or the current status of the cases.
Following the incident, the Dinajpur Battalion (42 BGB) initiated contact with India’s 63 BSF Battalion. The BGB has also requested a flag meeting with the BSF to obtain further information and discuss the incident.
The BGB said communication between the border forces of the two countries is continuing over the matter.
