A court in Dhaka on Thursday ordered Azan Ali Sharif, 17, arrested over the death of speech-impaired Mehedi Hasan Mim after a car ran him over on a footpath in Baridhara, to be sent to a juvenile correction centre.

Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal No. 8 passed the order following a petition filed by police, said investigating Gulshan police Sub Inspector MD Arefin Islam .

According to the case documents, Mehedi Hasan Mim, 24, hailed from Nilphamari and worked as a construction worker in the Gulshan area. At around 5:00pm on 22 September, a speeding private car mounted the footpath and ran him over while he was sitting in front of House No. 13 on Road No. 1 in Baridhara.

Mim sustained severe bleeding injuries to his head, chest, back and other parts of his body. On receiving the information, police rushed to the spot and took him to Kurmitola General Hospital, where the attending doctor examined him and declared him “brought dead”, mentioning road traffic accident (RTA) as the cause of death.

Mim’s elder brother, Md Moktadir Islam, filed a case with Gulshan Police Station on 23 September against a man named Akash Mark, who is currently absconding, in connection with the incident under Sections 98 and 105 of the Road Transport Act, 2018.

According to the detention plea filed by police, Azan Ali Sharif was identified as an accused during the investigation. Police arrested him on 23 September in the Gulshan area.

Police claimed that, while reviewing CCTV footage from the scene and surrounding areas, they saw Azan Ali Sharif getting out through the door on the right side of the driver’s seat of the private car immediately after the incident.

Police also said that the investigation had found preliminary evidence of Azan’s involvement in the incident and that the investigation was still underway.
