State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has called for stronger global action to prevent technology-facilitated violence against women and girls.
She made the call while addressing the “G77 and Emerging Partners Ministerial Roundtable on Technology Facilitated Violence against Women and Girls” at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly.
The State Minister outlined Bangladesh’s strengthened legal and institutional measures to prevent violence against women and girls, including faster investigations and trials, legal aid, social protection, rehabilitation, safe shelters and psychosocial support.
She also highlighted the recently launched women-only Pink Bus Service aimed at making public transport safer for women.
Shama Obaed underscored Bangladesh’s efforts to protect women affected by conflict, including through peacekeeping operations and support for Rohingya women and girls temporarily sheltered in Bangladesh.
She also introduced the Dhaka Dialogue, a Bangladesh-led initiative to develop voluntary guidelines for preventing, investigating and addressing digital harassment, and invited UN member states to join its Group of Friends.
The roundtable, convened by Croatia and UN Women, discussed emerging digital threats facing women and girls, including harassment, defamation, impersonation and AI-enabled abuse.
