At least three snakes were spotted in a corridor of the Education Ministry at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday morning, causing panic among officials and employees.
The snakes were seen on the 19th floor of Building No. 6, where the offices of the Education Minister and the Secretary are located.
Ministry officials said they first spotted two snakes in the corridor after arriving at work in the morning. A third snake was later seen, triggering panic among officials and employees.
The three snakes were later killed by staff members. However, their species could not be identified.
Officials and employees expressed surprise over how the snakes reached the 19th floor of such a tall building. They fear that more snakes may be hiding in one of the building’s storage areas.
A programme officer who works on the 19th floor said officials and employees became frightened after seeing the snakes moving through the corridor.
“How the snakes reached such a high floor has raised serious questions,” the officer said. “They may have been nesting and laying eggs in a storage area on one of the upper floors. The eggs may have hatched, and the young snakes then came out.”
Staff responsible for building maintenance have been asked to investigate the matter.
