The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the prime accused in the much-talked-about murder of a Hindu man who was allegedly beaten to death over allegations of stealing an electric water pump in Dhamrai of Dhaka.
The arrestee is Md Wazed Haji, 50.
A joint team of RAB-4 and RAB-15 arrested him from the Kolatoli Dolphin intersection area in Cox’s Bazar Sadar on Wednesday night, according to a press release issued by RAB-4 on Thursday.
The victim, Shankar Chandra Mondal, 28, was a day labourer.
According to the case statement and preliminary interrogation of Wazed, an electric water pump was stolen from a rice mill rented and operated by him in West Kayetpara area of Dhamrai several days before the incident.
Wazed allegedly suspected Shankar of being involved in the theft and asked him and his family members to come to his business office near the rice mill on 8 August.
Shankar reportedly went there with his father and two neighbours that night.
Wazed allegedly kept Shankar inside the office on various pretexts and sent his father away. He also allegedly asked the two neighbours to leave, telling them they would be served tea.
Later, Wazed and several associates allegedly restrained Shankar inside the office, tied his hands and legs with rope and beat him indiscriminately, accusing him of stealing the water pump.
At one point, Shankar sustained serious injuries and was allegedly sent home with the help of the two neighbours.
His family, however, could not take him to a hospital that night due to financial hardship and arranged local treatment at home.
As his condition deteriorated, Shankar was taken to Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex early on 9 August.
Doctors provided him with initial treatment and referred him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for better treatment.
But his family could not afford to take him there and brought him home, where he continued receiving local treatment.
Shankar died at his home early on 15 August.
Later, police visited the house, prepared an inquest report and sent the body to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
The victim’s father subsequently filed a murder case with Dhamrai Police Station.
The incident sparked widespread outrage and received extensive coverage in the media and on social media.
Following the filing of the case, RAB launched a shadow investigation to identify those involved and bring them to justice.
Acting on intelligence information, a joint team of RAB-4 and RAB-15 later conducted the operation in Cox’s Bazar and arrested Wazed, the prime accused, the elite force said.
The arrestee has been handed over to the concerned police station for further legal action.
