Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud inscribed his name into the record book by becoming the first Bangladeshi pacer to claim a hat-trick in Test cricket during the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi today.
Hasan achieved the feat in the 82nd over of Afghanistan’s first innings on Day 2 dismissing Ismat Alam, Zia-ur-Rehman and Qais Ahmad in three consecutive deliveries to leave the hosts reeling at 220-8.
He first bowled Ismat for 1 before trapping Zia-ur-Rehman leg-before for a duck.
Hasan then produced another superb delivery to edge Qais, whose catch was safely taken by wicketkeeper Liton Das to complete the historic hat-trick.
Hasan became the third Bangladesh bowler to claim a Test hat-trick. Leg-spinner Alok Kapali took the country’s first against Pakistan in Peshawar in 2003, while off-spinner Sohag Gazi achieved the feat against New Zealand in Dhaka in 2013.
However, Hasan is the first Bangladeshi pacer to join the elite list, ending a 13-year wait for another Bangladesh Test hat-trick.
Bangladesh had posted 346 in their first innings, riding on half-centuries from opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim (83), Shadman Islam (67) and Liton Das (53).
In reply, Afghanistan showed resistance through Abdul Malik’s 62 and Rahmat Shah’s 88, but Hasan’s late burst, coupled with Ebadot Hossain’s three wickets, halted their progress.
