India has donated a consignment of essential anti-tuberculosis (TB) medicines to Sri Lanka to support the continued availability of treatment for TB patients in the country.
The medicines were handed over by Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha to Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr Nalinda Jayatissa at the Ministry of Health in Colombo on 7 October. Deputy Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr Hansaka Wijemuni was also present.
The donation was made in response to a request from the Sri Lankan Government and was facilitated with the support of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The consignment comprises around three tonnes of essential anti-TB medicines, including more than 1.5 million tablets, with an estimated value of Rs 52 million.
The medicines include essential first-line drugs used in the treatment of tuberculosis and are expected to support the continuity and availability of treatment for TB patients in Sri Lanka.
The assistance marks another instance of India responding to Sri Lanka’s public health requirements. In August 2026, India donated 500 litres of Technical Malathion to Sri Lanka following a request from the Government to support efforts to combat dengue.
India and Sri Lanka have maintained longstanding cooperation in the health sector, including the construction and upgrading of hospitals and healthcare facilities, the provision of medicines and medical equipment, and capacity-building and training programmes.
India has also provided assistance to Sri Lanka during emergencies and periods of urgent medical need.
