The container vessel which ran aground after suffering steering failure while entering the navigation channel of Chattogram Port has been salvaged successfully on early Tuesday.
After rescue, the vessel MV CNC URANUS, carrying 1,282 Twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) containers has been anchored at the Bravo Anchorage of the Outer Anchorage of the port.
The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) in cooperation with the Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard salvaged the vessel, clearing the port channel, said CPA Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim.
Earlier, the vessel, which arrived from China with 24 crewmembers onboard, developed a fault in its steering gear while entering the navigation channel through the estuary.
As a result, it lost control, struck red buoy-2 and subsequently ran aground near a retaining wall.
Rescue and salvage operations were initiated immediately with the help of tugboats to refloat the vessel under the supervision of the concerned CPA official.
However, the channel was safe for vessel movement.
The port users observed that the incident highlighted the vulnerability of the country’s busiest seaport, noting that the lone navigation channel had narrowly escaped a major disaster.
They warned that any blockade or disruption in the channel could severely affect Bangladesh’s international trade, industrial production, supply chains and overall business activities, as Chattogram Port handles 92% of the country’s import and export cargo.
They stressed the need for timely precautionary measures, effective planning, and rapid response mechanism to tackle the potential challenges.
