At least four people were killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in Gaibandha and Bogura districts amid the Eid holiday rush, police and hospital authorities said on Wednesday (27 May).

In Gaibandha, two people — a motorcyclist and a pedestrian — died after a speeding motorcycle hit a man attempting to cross the Dhaka-Rangpur Highway in Palashbari upazila late Tuesday night.

The deceased were identified as Alamgir Hossain, 26, son of Abdul Gafur Ali from Joddar Para village in Nageshwari upazila of Kurigram, and Osman Gani, 60, a resident of Palashbari municipality area.

According to police and local sources, Alamgir was returning home to Kurigram from Dhaka on his motorcycle around midnight when the accident occurred at Raigram area on the highway. The motorcycle reportedly struck Osman Gani while he was crossing the road.

The impact threw both men onto the road, leaving them critically injured.

Locals rescued the victims and rushed them to Palashbari Upazila Health Complex, where Alamgir was declared dead upon arrival. Osman Gani was later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital due to his critical condition, where he died while undergoing treatment early Wednesday morning.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Palashbari Police Station, Sarowar Alam Khan, said the motorcyclist was still conscious after the accident, and police identified him through the national identity card found in his possession.

Meanwhile, in Bogura’s Kahalu upazila, another two people were killed after a truck rammed into a stationary passenger bus on the Bogura-Naogaon regional highway early Wednesday.

The accident occurred around 2:45am near Bowbazar area adjacent to the Paglapir shrine in Narhatta union.

The deceased were identified as Uttam Mondal, 30, son of Jitendra Nath Mondal from Komarpur village in Badalgachhi upazila of Naogaon, and Hridoy, 30, son of Abdur Razzak from Malshun village in Adamdighi upazila of Bogura.

Police said a Hanif Paribahan bus travelling from Dhaka to Naogaon had stopped on the roadside after suffering a tyre puncture. Shortly afterwards, a Naogaon-bound truck crashed into the rear of the parked bus.

The collision sent both vehicles into a roadside ditch, leaving several passengers and transport workers seriously injured.

Fire service personnel and police rescued the victims and sent them to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.

Bus supervisor Uttam Mondal died around 4:15am while undergoing treatment, while truck helper Hridoy succumbed to his injuries later in the morning. At least four others remain under treatment.

Kahalu Police Station Investigation Officer Mahbub Alam said legal proceedings were underway and traffic movement on the highway had returned to normal.
