The BNP National Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, will meet on Saturday evening to discuss its nominee for the country’s next President alongside the current political situation and organisational matters.

According to multiple party sources, the closed-door meeting is expected to focus primarily on finalising the party’s position regarding the upcoming presidential election.

Party insiders said the process of electing the country’s next President is expected to be completed within August. Against this backdrop, Standing Committee members will discuss potential candidates for the constitutional post.

Senior BNP leaders indicated that the final decision on the party’s nominee is likely to rest with BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.

Earlier on 26 July, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a programme in Bogura that the Standing Committee would decide, in accordance with the Constitution and the law, whether the next president should be a party figure or a non-partisan individual.

Although senior leaders have refrained from publicly discussing potential nominees, party insiders said several prominent names have surfaced during internal deliberations.

Among them, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is reportedly considered a leading contender because of his more than a decade of service as secretary general, political experience, clean public image and acceptability across political parties.

Other names reportedly under discussion include Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan.

Party policymakers said the presidency is not merely a ceremonial office but one that carries important constitutional responsibilities, particularly during periods of national crisis. They said the party wants to proceed cautiously after considering all relevant factors.

Following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin on 24 July, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has been serving as acting president in accordance with the Constitution.

Under the Constitution, a new president must be elected within 90 days of the office becoming vacant.
