Police on Friday detained 23 people on suspicion of involvement in militant activities during a raid at Tejgaon College Jame Mosque in the capital’s Farmgate area.
A senior officer of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Tejgaon Division said the detainees were held during a raid based on intelligence that they were holding a secret meeting.
“They were detained based on intelligence information. We suspect they may be involved in militant activities. Their identities and organisational affiliations are being verified,” the officer said.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ibn-e-Mizan confirmed that 23 people were detained during the operation.
He said the authorities were examining various information about the detainees and that details would be disclosed later.
Several teams of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit were also working at the scene, according to law enforcement sources.
The authorities have yet to confirm whether the detainees are members of any particular organisation.
