BNP interviews three aspirants for Thakurgaon-1 by-election

The BNP’s parliamentary board on Friday interviewed three aspirants seeking the party’s nomination for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election.

The interviews were held at BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s political office in the capital’s Gulshan on Friday night, said BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan, adding that the nominee would be announced later.

The three aspirants are Thakurgaon district BNP President and former mayor of Thakurgaon municipality Mirza Faisal Amin, district BNP Vice-President Obaidullah Masud, and Sultanul Ferdous Chowdhury Nomro.

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman presided over the parliamentary board meeting, which was attended by acting secretary general Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Standing Committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Begum Selima Rahman, Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, Amanullah Aman, Ismail Zabiullah and Dr Farhad Halim Donar.

After the meeting, Rizvi told reporters that the meeting was held to interview the party’s nomination aspirants and that the decision on the nominee would be announced later.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir won Thakurgaon-1 in the 13th national parliamentary election. The seat fell vacant after he was elected president.

According to the Election Commission’s schedule, the by-election will be held on 29 October. Candidates must submit nomination papers to the returning officer by 27 September. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on 29 September, while the deadline for withdrawal of candidature is 7 October. Electoral symbols will be allocated on 8 October.
