Two people were killed and at least eight others injured after a boundary wall of Mirpur University College collapsed on people waiting to buy subsidised goods from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) in the capital’s Mirpur area on Tuesday.

The accident occurred at around 1:30pm.

One of the deceased was identified as Nasima Begum, a resident of the Janata Housing area in Mirpur-2. The identity of the other victim could not be confirmed immediately.

According to Mirpur Model Police Station, people had been queuing beside the college’s boundary wall since morning to purchase TCB products when the old wall suddenly collapsed.

Several people in the queue were trapped under the debris and sustained serious injuries. Rescue workers and locals rushed them to different hospitals, where two were declared dead while the others are undergoing treatment.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Model Police Station Hafizur Rahman said an old section of the college’s boundary wall suddenly collapsed, killing two people who had come to buy TCB products.

“The injured were rescued and taken to hospitals for treatment,” the OC said.
