Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam on Sunday submitted his bail bond before a Dhaka court after securing eight-week anticipatory bail from the High Court in an attempted murder case filed with Pallabi Police Station.

He submitted the bail bond after appearing before the court of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Aulad Hossain Mohammad Junaid, said court sources.

Earlier on 21 July, his driver Obaidur Rahman filed the case with Pallabi Police Station accusing Gazi Nazrul Islam and others of assaulting and attempting to strangle him to death. Later on 10 August, the High Court granted Nazrul Islam eight weeks’ anticipatory bail in the case.

According to the case statement, Obaidur, who worked as the personal driver of Gazi Nazrul Islam, lived at his sister’s residence at Rose Garden Tower in the Kalshi area of Pallabi.

Nazrul Islam, who was acquainted with the family through a relative, used to visit the residence. At one point, an alleged relationship developed between Nazrul Islam and Obaidur’s niece.

After learning about it, Obaidur informed his family and asked Nazrul Islam to refrain from the relationship, following which the lawmaker allegedly threatened him with dire consequences.

The case statement further alleges that a group attempted to blackmail Nazrul with some “inappropriate videos” involving him and Obaidur’s niece. Nazrul Islam suspected that Obaidur was involved in the blackmail and had leaked the videos to the media and the group.

Later on 14 July, Obaidur was allegedly attacked and threatened with death on the instructions of Nazrul Islam.

Obaidur subsequently filed the case accusing Nazrul Islam alongside Aminur Rahman, 55, Masum Billah, 41, Motassim Billah, 25, and Rakibul Hasan, 30.
