Police have detained 624 teenagers and youths in simultaneous drives against teenage gangs in Cumilla district.

Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police Lutfur Rahman said on Thursday said teenagers and young people have recently been found involved in various criminal activities, creating a negative impact on society.

Simultaneous drives were conducted in all 18 police stations of the district, including different areas of Cumilla city and places where harassment by unruly youths has been reported, he said.

Senior officials of the district police directly took part in the drives, Lutfur Rahman said.

The detainees’ previous involvement in criminal activities is being verified and necessary legal action will be taken accordingly, he said.

Meanwhile, 28 youths were detained as suspects in Daudkandi of Cumilla during a daylong drive.

At around 10pm Wednesday, 22 of the youths  broke through the police station door and left while chanting slogans.

A video showing a commotion involving the youths and their guardians in front of the police station has also circulated online.

Officer-in-Charge Daudkandi Model Police Station Mohammad Sajedul Islam, however, said there was no major incident.

“Twenty-eight youths were detained as suspects for roaming around unnecessarily. When their relatives came together, there was some crowding,” he said.

He said 22 of them were released into the custody of their guardians at around 10:30pm, while the remaining six are still being screened.
